Big Battlefield Walks Weekends - Battle of Maldon 991
The Promenade Park, Park Drive, Maldon, Essex, CM9 5JG
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Register of Historic Battlefields in England the Battlefields Trust and its partner organisations are arranging a series of battlefield walks in September 2025 to coincide with Heritage Open Days.
Come and join the Battlefields Trust to explore this Anglo Saxon-Viking battle which took place in 991.
The Battle of Maldon saw the local Anglo-Saxon forces under the leadership of Byrhtnoth, the Ealdorman of Essex defeated by a raiding force of Danes and Norwegian. The battle was commemorated in an Anglo-Saxon poem written a few years later, providing more information about it than any other battle from pre-Norman England.
The walk will tour the battle site, cross the tidal causeway to Northey Island, and finish with a visit to the statue of Ealdorman Byrhtnoth on the promenade at Maldon. The visit will take 2-3 hours.
Tickets are limited to 30 people.
