For one special day, discover one of Carlisle Cathedral's hidden treasures as we uncover the remarkable Bishop Bell Brass, a rare and fascinating survivor from the medieval world.
Normally kept covered for its protection, this extraordinary portrait brass commemorates Richard Bell, Prior of Durham and Bishop of Carlisle from 1478 to 1495. Visitors will have the rare opportunity to view the brass in full and examine the intricate craftsmanship of a monument that has endured for more than 500 years.
Bishop Bell is depicted in the rich vestments of a medieval bishop, complete with mitre, crozier and eucharistic robes. But look closer and you'll discover some of the brass's greatest mysteries. Bordering the figure are a series of beautifully engraved creatures. Some are recognisable examples of medieval flora and fauna, while others are far stranger. Who or what are these mysterious beings? What did they mean to the people who created them?
Throughout the day, our expert guides will be offering a programme of free talks, exploring the history of Bishop Bell, the artistry of the brass, the theories surrounding its enigmatic creatures, and the vital conservation work that requires this important monument to remain covered for much of the year.
