A talk by Ian Collins about his new biography of the writer Ronald Blythe (1922-2023). Ronald is best known as the author of “Akenfield”, his portrait of a Suffolk village. Ian looks at his life and work, providing insight into his friends & family.

Ronald Blythe spent much of his life in Suffolk. He published over 40 books and thousand of essays. His friends included John and Christine Nash, E M Forster, Patricia Highsmith, Richard Mabey and Benjamin Britten.

Blythe’s gift was to marvel in the everyday, finding Thomas Hardy in February rain and John Clare in country tracks. His writing was intimate, meditative and often laced with wry humour, inviting his readers to share his enchanting perspective on the world.

Ian Collins has drawn on access to private letters, notebooks and papers to give us a complete picture of Blythe the man and the writer whose writings have informed our understanding of heritage and culture.
