Books, Bonnets and Bathing in a Slipper

In 1776, the year the elegant Newark Town Hall was opened, the Town Council was well established and was that year celebrating its 150th anniversary! The town was looking towards a prosperous future and there were a dozen apprentices registered to begin learning a skill or trade from their master (or mistress!) There were opportunities for a Cooper, a Cabinetmaker or a Cordwainer, a Sadler, a Stationer and a Spinningwheel maker. What trade would you have chosen? What intrigues us to find out more about their stories? Looking back 250, 150, or 50 years, we can delve into the lives of past inhabitants whose lives became bound up in books, fashioned by bonnets or wrapped up in a bar of soap and a towel for one shilling and sixpence.
