Bradford Playhouse Heritage Open Day
4-12 Chapel Street, Bradford, West Yorkshire, BD1 5DL
Step behind the scenes at one of Bradford’s cultural and theatrical gems!
Join us at the Bradford Playhouse on Saturday 13th September, 10am–4pm, for a day packed with history and fun for all ages.
Backstage Tours – Discover the secrets of our beautiful 1930s Art Deco theatre on one of our free guided tours (11am, 1pm, 3pm). Go behind the curtain, explore newly upgraded areas, and hear stories from the Playhouse's colourful past. Free, but ticketed to manage numbers – booking advised!
Alfie Trail – Our friendly theatre dog Alfie has hidden himself around the building! Kids can follow his trail with a fun puzzle and colouring booklet – spot all ten Alfies and claim bragging rights.
Archive Displays – Take a walk through Playhouse history with an exhibition of photos, drawings, and posters from our archive, showcasing everything from our early days as Jowett Hall to the wartime years, legendary alumni like Esmé Church, and our latest restoration work.
Share Your Memories – Got a story to tell? Visit our memory station to write, draw, or record your own Playhouse memories – help us grow our living archive of Bradford's theatre history.
Kitchen Drama – We're cooking up a community recipe book! Stop by the Kitchen Drama table to share your favourite recipe or scan the QR code to submit it later.
Lucky Duck Lolly Pull – Try your luck with our duck-themed lolly dip – you might just waddle away with a prize!

Backstage areas are not accessible to wheelchair users and those with ambulatory access needs - there are a lot of stairs. The tour will be moving through those backstage areas, as will parts of the Alfie trail. We will provide a place to park prams for those who wish to take one of the tours. The archive exhibition, memory area, Lucky Duck Lolly Pull and Kitchen Drama activities will be taking place in the Bar, Box Office and Auditorium (front of stage), which have step free access. Dogs very welcome! We have our own canine ambassador, Alfie, who will be around on the day to greet everyone.
