Brick by Brick: Stories of Dobcroft
The Intact Centre, 49 Whitby Avenue, Ingol, Preston, Lancashire, PR2 3YP
Discover the hidden heritage of Dobcroft Nature Reserve during this year’s Heritage Open Day, where the theme of Architecture is explored through everyday lives and local stories. Once the busy site of Cottam Brickworks, Dobcroft was a place of hard work, shared routines, and community livelihoods. Workers spent long days shaping clay into bricks that built homes and workplaces across the area, while families nearby relied on the industry for their daily living. Today, the land has been transformed from an industrial workplace into a thriving haven for wildlife and a peaceful green space for local people.
This special event offers a chance to explore how the lives of workers and their families shaped the landscape we see today. Join interactive guided walks to hear stories about daily routines at the brickworks, the skills people learned, and how the site supported generations of local families. Discover how the clay pits and pathways that remain today reflect the working lives once carried out here.
Families can take part in hands-on activities suitable for all ages, including activities inspired by traditional brick making and nature-based crafts celebrating the site’s renewal. Informative displays will help bring these everyday histories to life.
Whether you're interested in local history, nature, or a family day out, this is a chance to connect with Dobcroft’s past and see how people’s stories continue to shape the landscape today.
