The year in which the Bayeux Tapestry is being exhibited in the UK presents a remarkable opportunity to shine a spotlight on another extraordinary textile artwork with strong local significance: the Bridgwater Historical Tapestry. This is only the third time in 75 years that it has been on public display, presenting a rare opportunity to view this wonderful piece of Bridgwater’s heritage.
Designed and made by the Girls of Westover Secondary Modern School in 1951 to celebrate the Festival of Britain of the same year, it was extended in 1969 by the Pupils of Westover Secondary Mixed School as a celebration of 500 years of the Mayoralty of Bridgwater. Measuring just under 32 metres long, the tapestry consists of embroidered panels depicting various events from the Stone Age to the Modern Age, offering a glimpse into Bridgwater's long history. It is a testament to the town's cultural and historical significance and is a valuable resource for understanding Bridgwater's past.
