Brisley Church - Rural Life Through Generations in One Village
St Bartholomew’s Church, Church Street, Brisley, Dereham, Norfolk, NR20 5AA
Brisley is a small rural village which contains one of the finest medieval churches in the area. The church is the focal point of village life and village residents are doing all they can to save the church for future generations. As part of a Heritage Lottery Fund grant ‘The Friends of Brisley Church’ are providing a wide range of activities including supporting this event for Heritage Week.
When you visit this event you will also have an opportunity to see some beautiful artifacts including 14th & 15th century wall paintings, a medieval piscina in a small area which was once a small chapel, carved box pews, a 3 decker pulpit, 14th century rood screen, 14th century baptismal font- with a witches hat above it, magnificent glass – including a huge west window with fragments of coloured medieval glass and a 19th century east window depicting the crucifixion, a 14th century sedilia and piscina and besides much else there is buried beneath the church, through a richly carved medieval door a fascinating crypt which may have come from the original Saxon church but was used up until the early 20th century as a holding cell for prisoners on their way to Norwich Castle to be tried for offences, often resulting in being hung- we have, amongst other stories, the biography of one such prisoner.
