British Restaurant Exhibition and Digital Trail Pop-Up
The Greenhouse, Victoria Park, 3 Stanhope Road, Victoria Park, Portsmouth, Hampshire, PO1 3HJ
Visit us inside the Greenhouse Community Building and explore the hidden story of the British Restaurant and its vital role in everyday wartime life. Through a series of illustrated information boards, uncover how British Restaurants supported local communities during the Second World War, providing affordable meals and a sense of normality during times of rationing and uncertainty.
Chat with our friendly staff on the day to learn more about the research behind the exhibition, and use QR codes to access our interactive heritage map, which highlights key sites and stories connected to Portsmouth’s wartime past. You’ll also be able to listen to oral histories that bring these experiences to life through personal memories and voices.
About the exhibition:
The British Restaurant information boards were created using in-depth volunteer-led research carried out at Portsmouth History Centre. The final designs and illustrations were produced by artist Candy Bamber.
Alongside this, the oral history project features four local residents who share their personal stories of life in the park, Portsmouth, and during the war years. Each story is accompanied by a unique artwork created by artist Jasmine Potter, offering a visual interpretation of these lived experiences and adding an artistic layer to the historical narratives.
This event offers a chance to explore history through research, art, and personal memory, and to reflect on how wartime Portsmouth shaped everyday community life.
