Rare opportunity to visit the Non-Conformist Chapel in Ladywell Cemetery with exhibitions highlighting many of the 'Illustrious Deceased' and the War Dead of both cemeteries. A general tour of the cemeteries will take place at 2pm

An introduction to the two adjacent cemeteries established under the 1850s Burial Acts. Both cemeteries followed the principles on the laying out of Victorian garden cemeteries. The dividing wall between the two was removed after local authority amalgamation giving the impression of a single large cemetery which is now designated as a local nature reserve. The lodges and remaining chapel, in Gothic Revival style, were constructed with Kentish rag stone and faced with Bath stone. Many imposing memorials commemorate numerous luminaries such as the decadent poet Earnest Dowson; Great War poet David Jones; musicologist Sir George Grove; Waterloo veteran Elizabeth Watkins; Rorke's Drift survivor Arthur Howard; and social reformer sisters Rachel & Margaret McMillan. Contrasting war memorials and individuals headstones commemorate over 400 casualties from both World Wars. The cemeteries are particularly noted for the variety of butterflies, moths and other invertebrates. They provide sanctuaries for quiet contemplation in a heavily urbanised part of South London.
