Archive Tours

Buckinghamshire Archives looks after over 800 years of history, with everything from medieval songbooks to Paralympic photographs preserved so that future generations can enjoy them. As your local archive, we're responsible for preserving the county's memories and stories that are about the people who have lived in Buckinghamshire throughout the centuries.

For Heritage Open Days, we'd love for you to join us on a guided tour through our collection, discovering some of the rare documents we look after that highlight the everyday histories we treasure. You can get to grips with historic materials like vellum, learn the stories of Victorian prisoners, and speak to our fantastic team to hear about the work we do to preserve today's history for tomorrow. The archive will be moving to a new location soon, so this will be one of the last opportunities to see our collection at the current site.

If you're interested in a career in heritage, curious about history, or just want to learn a little about our particularly strange jobs, then make sure you book your free ticket as soon as you can as places are very limited. Even if we're the archive for Buckinghamshire, we look after documents that have come from all over the world, and this is a rare chance to hear the stories of the everyday people who made the county what it is today.

Parts of the tour will take place in the strongrooms which can be very cramped. Some wheelchairs may not be able to fit. Disabled parking is available on site, but please contact us in advance as this has to be pre-booked.
