Bywell - Lost Village - Forgotten People
St Andrew's Church, Bywell Village, Stocksfield, Northumberland, NE43 7AD
The Story of Bywell: A Historical Landscape - Why is Bywell here, and why does it have two Anglo-Saxon churches? (13:00-14.30)
Invaders and settlers left their mark, Celtic monks kick started the local economy, a bishop was consecrated, a king was born, fine churches were extended, Oxbridge colleges were founded and a great flood dramatically altered the fate of the locals before Victorian enterprise founded a stately home and parkland. Today it is a tranquil place, loved by locals and visitors alike as a place of retreat and beauty.
Working Lives of Bywell - A brief history of the church and an exploration of the graveyard. (15.30-17:00)
There are fascinating tales of service and achievement inscribed on the headstones in St Peter's graveyard. Although, by their very nature, they record the history of only a part of society, they contribute to the history of Bywell in a way that augments documentary evidence. Even before the convention of using headstones to mark graves became popular, earlier generations in Bywell left evidence of their funerary practices. This event is hosted by the Churches Conservation Trust.
