Calverton History Walk
All Saints Church, Church Hill, Calverton, Buckinghamshire, MK19 6EE
The morning guided walk will compare the essentially agricultural activities across the open fields of a rural community with the simple industries housed in the various cottages and out-buildings of this attractive conservation area village. Starting from the Church porch, walkers will have the chance to view the supporting exhibition before setting out on the 1½ mile route with two stiles to cross whilst viewing sites including brewing, butchery, fish-farming, quarrying, market gardening and pit-prop making, and finally the inevitable sheep rearing before returning through the village to learn about lace-making, baking, wine-making, hay-making and finally the long shifts put in by the radio operators of Calverton’s contribution to the WW2 war effort by sending out Bletchley Park’s radio signals to occupied Europe.
The ground is rough meadow, so sensible shoes and clothing are advised particularly if wet. The walk lasts about an hour and a half, returning to the Church where modestly priced hot and cold drinks, hot sausage rolls, and a variety of cakes will be available curtesy of All Saints volunteers, who will set tables in the church and outside too if the weather is fine.
