Canterbury Cemetery Friends: Exceptional tales of remarkable lives

The Canterbury Cemetery Friends Open Day will offer tours to take people back in time. Join us on a trip to discover poignant tales about people whose modest lives were shaped by significant historic events and touched by fame. Visitors can also learn how ordinary people managed their daily lives during some of the century’s most turbulent times.
The day will feature informal heritage discussions and a special sneak peek inside the unused ragstone community chapel, designed and built in 1877 by Mr John Green Hall (whose grave is situated directly in front of the chapel). During your visit, you’re invited to relax and enjoy refreshments in the chapel or the surrounding area, or request copy of our Family Discovery Trail map (for a modest donation) and go on a self-guided adventure. Our popular tree tour will also be on offer.
Contributions are requested, but optional, for refreshments and maps.
On the open day, guests are invited to:
* Learn about the many fascinating stories of the ordinary people of Canterbury City Cemetery;
* Find out about exploring and preserving local heritage;
* Discover the rare and unusual trees that live in this biodiverse and serene environment;
* Meet others who are interested in the history of Canterbury and its citizens; and
* Locate a grave with the cemetery manager.

It’s fine to walk your bicycle in the cemetery, but please don’t ride it through.
