The newly formed Canterbury Cemetery friends group will be holding its very first open day from 1 to 5pm on Sunday, 21 September 2025. Canterbury City Cemetery an extensive and tranquil public area that’s only a few steps from the bustle of town.

The Canterbury Cemetery Friends Open Day will feature guided biodiversity and history tours, informal heritage discussions, and a special sneak peek inside the unused ragstone Remembrance Chapel, which was designed and built by Mr John Green Hall in 1877.

On the open day, guests are invited to:
* Learn more about why Canterbury City Cemetery is such a fascinating place;
* Find out about preserving local heritage and biodiversity; and
* Discover an overlooked site that has a vast amount of potential as a thriving multipurpose resource for the surrounding community and beyond.

Everyone is invited to get involved in this new community. Please come and support us.

Timings & Tours

Sunday 21 September:
1.30 to 2.30 biodiversity tour; 3 to 4pm history tour (tour durations are approximate)

Directions:
The cemetery is an easy 15 minute walk from the Canterbury West train station and a 20 minute stroll from the centre of Canterbury. Extremely limited onsite parking is available.

It’s fine to walk bicycles through the cemetery, but please don’t ride them through.
