Step into Chelmsford’s darker history, where justice was swift, public and often painful.

Step into Chelmsford’s darker history, where justice was swift, public and often painful. This talk explores the Tudor cage, whipping post and stocks; the early Houses of Correction; the debtors’ and felons’ prisons; and the sometimes-chaotic county gaol by the river. Learn how offenders were punished, fined, disciplined or occasionally able to escape—sometimes through remarkably inventive routes. From privies over the water to manorial courts, great escapes and the “short sharp shock,” this is a vivid journey through four centuries of crime and control. Engaging, surprising and full of local colour. Please note that this talk covers issues such as witchcraft and executions.
