Celebrating 850 years of St Mary's Church Sprotbrough
St. Marys Church, Main Street, Sprotbrough, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, DN5 7RH
This year, St Mary’s Sprotbrough is celebrating 850 years since the church was erected! The building you see today was mainly built in the 13th and 14th centuries, but some of the masonry inside can be dated to the 12th century proving that there has been a church building in the village for at least 850 years. That is 850 years of serving the people of Sprotbrough; all those baptisms, weddings and funerals! Estimates show that there could be around 5000 people buried in the grounds!
As well as displaying photographs of the church in the past, we will be borrowing some very old documents and registers from Doncaster Archives. We will also display the church silver and other artefacts.
Our dedicated team of bellringers will be getting involved.
There will be tours of the churchyard where you can find out some interesting stories behind some of the people buried there.
There will be refreshments served and children can be creative while adults enjoy a drink and homemade cake.
The weekend will end with a celebration service at 6pm.
