Centenary of Official Opening of Painted Fabrics Ltd at Little Norton, Sheffield
Lees Hall Golf Club, Hemsworth Road, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S8 8LL
With the motto ‘Work not Charity’, Painted Fabrics Ltd was set up by Annie Bindon Carter with disabled WW1 veterans to produce textiles which were made into clothes and household items for sale. The former WW1 women's camp at Little Norton which also had workshop space was up for sale and identified as suitable for the business and was purchased in 1922/23. The Little Norton site was officially opened in August 1925 and finally closed in 1959. Our event celebrates the centenary and takes the story from the beginnings through to its closure and redevelopment as local authority housing. It is a rare chance to find out more about this remarkable place built around an old WW1 camp and the people who lived and worked there. We will look at the role of the workshops in WW2 as shadow factories building parts for spitfires.
There will be an afternoon and early evening session which will repeat the information - please book for only one.
