A small museum showing the history of one of the oldest schools in Newcastle. A museum full of fascinating information about school life and South Heaton from Victorian times, through two World Wars, up to the present day.

This small museum, created by a group of enthusiastic volunteers, provides a unique insight into the life of a Newcastle primary school which first opened its gates in 1893. Chillingham Road School, since it began as a Victorian Board School, has been at the centre of the community of South Heaton.

Displays include extracts from head teachers’ log books, original photographs and documents, which until 2013 lay gathering dust in drawers and cupboards. The stories of the boys on the school’s war memorial are remembered, and the lives of the families in the adjacent streets are revealed. School equipment from across the years reflect the changing face of education over the past 120 years.
The school archives will also be available including log books, admission registers, photographs and more.

There’s something of interest here for any adult or child who has ever been to school, as well as for local history enthusiasts.
