Christ Church, Northcourt
Northcourt Road, Abingdon, Oxfordshire, OX14 1PL
The Tithe Barn in Northcourt Road was built about 1270, when Northcourt was a little village and the Abbey owned all the land as far as Lodge Hill. It was a grain store for a tenth (a tithe) of the land's produce. After the Abbey was dissolved it remained as a farm building, until north Abingdon's post-war expansion. Local Christians believed a local church was needed, and by their hard work and gifts the barn was restored as a church, which opened in 1961 and has been very popular ever since.
The 60s extension has meeting rooms for community use, and this year had a full eco-upgrade and heat pump installation. Some of the other farm buildings have also been redeveloped for community use, including an attractive hall and a popular cafe.
