St. George's at Ivychurch is vastly out of proportion with the small village around it. It has striking battlements and many features of interest including beautiful wood carvings, a ragstone font and medieval scratch graffiti. It also houses a collection of historical artefacts from rural life.
For Heritage Open Days:
11th-20th September at 2pm - visitors can ascend the Tower and look inside the Clock Chamber (booking required, max. 3 people per time, capped at 9 people per day). In addition, a Shepherd's Hut in the churchyard will have artwork on display, curated by Art in Romney Marsh.
12th September 10am-6pm - Volunteers will be present serving refreshments. They can guide you to features of interest. The Parvis Chamber of the church will be open for visitors to view. The Parvis Chamber is where travelling priests would have stayed. During WWII the chamber was used to store food and other essentials, as the tower was used as a lookout post.
The church is open daily 10am-3pm, but the Tower, Clock Room and Parvis Chamber are not usually accessible.
The Romney Marsh Historic Churches Trust helps care for 14 medieval churches on Romney Marsh. It offers free audio-visual guides via its website and the app Izi Travel.

Booking is required and there is a maximum of 3 people per time, capped at 9 people per day, so early booking is advised. To book please email [email protected] Pre-booking is not required to look around the rest of the church, including the Parvis Chamber on 12th Sept, or to view the artwork in the Shepherd's Hut which will be on display throughout.

Accessibility details
Most of the church has level access but the Tower, Parvis Chamber and Clock Room are up a staircase and some steps may be steep - participation is at your own risk. Due to health and safety, the tower and clock room activities are not suitable for children under 11 years old or for visitors carrying babies or large/heavy bags. Neither is the activity suitable for those who are visually- or mobility-impaired. If you need further advice on this please contact the churchwarden Margaret Waite on 01797 344283. Some floor slabs may be uneven. There is an accessible toilet within the church.
Additional information
There is an ancient pub next to the church which serves food and drink. It has a garden overlooking the church. For those interested in church history and architecture, there are 14 medieval churches on Romney Marsh including several others close to this location.
