Come and see the spectacular recently-restored mosaics decorating the inside of the Church. This special open day will showcase the community engagement events we are putting on as part of our National Lottery Heritage Fund project.

This year for Heritage Open Day we are celebrating the wonderful architecture and internal decoration of the church.

The architecture:
The Church of the Sacred Heart & St Catherine of Alexandria in Droitwich, Worcestershire is a Grade II* listed building and was built at the beginning of the 20th Century. It is believed to be unique in Europe - the whole of the interior is decorated with mosaics, above a marble lower level. They are composed of 'tesserae' - coloured pieces of Venetian glass smalti and in the style of the churches in Ravenna, Italy. On the day our volunteer tour guides will be in the church to help share it’s history and stories.

Sharing the heritage:
Having been awarded a grant by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the mosaics have recently undergone a full restoration. In addition, the original 'cartoons' - the full-size designs by Gabriel Pippet, have also been restored and digitised and these can be viewed in the visitor centre. During Heritage Open Day visitors can make their own mini mosaic and visit the visitor centre. Visitors will also be able purchase tea and cake in our pop up café.
