Church of the Sacred Heart & St Catherine of Alexandria
Worcester Road, Droitwich, Worcestershire, WR98AZ
This year for Heritage Open Day we are showcasing the wonderful architecture and internal decoration of the church but with a particular focus on the stunning, very rare and indeed priceless ‘Cosmatesque Pavement’ and beautiful mosaic floors uncovered during the restoration. Following the theme of this year’s Heritage Open Days we have also researched a typical working day for the craftsman mosaicist, Maurice Josey, in the early 20th century. On the day our volunteer tour guides will again be in the church to help share it’s history and stories.
The Church of the Sacred Heart & St Catherine of Alexandria in Droitwich, Worcestershire is a Grade II* listed building and was built at the beginning of the 20th Century. It is believed to be unique in Europe - the whole of the interior is decorated with mosaics, above a marble lower level. They are composed of 'tesserae' - coloured pieces of Venetian glass 'smalti' and in the style of the churches in Ravenna, Italy. Having been awarded a grant by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the mosaics were fully restored in 2025. During these works two stunning floors were uncovered in the side chapels. The project was extended to cover their restoration and additional funding was granted by The Droitwich Preservation Trust to complete this. This special church is now amongst the finest in Europe.
Visitors will also be able purchase tea and cake in our pop up café, with any proceeds going to the long term maintenance of the mosaics.
