Discover Old St Nicholas on the Hill, Uphill

Discover this solitary, partially ruined Norman church which stands alone on a hill above the Roman port of Axium, overlooking the wide bays of Weston-super-Mare and Brean. A steep climb to the church is rewarded with views over the marshes, Brean Down with its evidence of an Iron Age Hill Fort and the Bristol Channel.

Families can explore the church with Heritage Open Day trails, taking a deeper dive into the history of this beautiful and isolated space and the stories of its past.

Directions:

Uphill is 1 mile south of Weston-super-Mare off the A370. Free parking on the road, at Uphill Village Car Park or near the Boathouse Café, additional paid parking nearby. A steep unpaved footpath to the hill rises near The Dolphin public house; a slightly gentler but longer route passes by Folly Lane further to the East. Accessibility details

Please could visitors take care on the hill, not owned by the trust, on which the church sits. Sensible footwear advised. Due to the location of this site the Churches Conservation Trust urges caution to those with limited mobility - access is up a long, steep grass slope to the churchyard entrance, then a sloping tarmac porch with a level entrance into a flagstone – floored porch and one step down to the nave and chancel.
