Coleton Fishacre
Coleton Fishacre, Brownstone Road, Kingswear, Dartmouth, Devon, TQ6 0EQ
Country retreat of theatrical family the D'Oyly Carte's, the location of Coleton Fishacre inspired the family to build an idyllic Arts and Crafts home, surrounded by sea views and nestled within a secluded valley.
Building work and landscaping began in 1924, with the house finished and the family able to enjoy the fruits of the labour from May 1926. 100 years later we're celebrating the centenary with a pop up exhibition of archive images that documented the build, giving visitors a glimpse from past to present.
Outside, the garden enjoys a climate as mild as South Cornwall, thanks to its location. Many exotic and tender plants thrive here, in formal gardens, borders and woodland. Head to the furthest point of the garden where spectacular views of the South Devon coastline unfold, wander past blooming rhododendrons that fill the air with heady fragrances and soak up candelabra primulas as they flower alongside streamside borders.
After your exploration, refresh and refuel at Cafe Coleton with light snacks and refreshments, or browse the lifestyle giftshop, stocked full of sustainable gifts, souvenirs and plants to take home.
Coleton Fishacre is open daily from 1030-1700, with last entry to the house at 1630. Parking charges applicable.
