Combined Military Services Museum
Carriage House, Station Road, Maldon, Essex, CM9 4LQ
The Combined Military Services Museum houses original British military artifacts, including the only surviving MK2 'Cockle' canoe as used in Operation Frankton, the 'Cockleshell Heroes' raid. We show a nationally important collection including English Civil War arms and armour, the 10th Century Maldon sword, and uniforms from the late 18th century to modern counter-terrorism. A significant feature of the collection is a TSR2 jet engine, the only remaining example on public display. There is a unique collection of espionage equipment belonging to British agents Peter and Prue Mason including 'James Bond' style gadgets including shoes with hidden blade and a fountain pen gun. There is also a Bulgarian Umbrella - the type used to assassinate Georgi Markov in 1978.
New for 2025 are displays featuring 'Prisoners of War', 'The Real Rogue Heroes of the 1st SAS', 'Women at War' and the 'Victory over Japan' collection featuring an original Katana sword confiscated in Hiroshima and lent to the Museum by a local family. The new Stanton Air Raid Shelter display feeds nicely into this years' Heritage Open Weekend theme of Architecture and is a sobering reminder of life on the home front in WW2.
Also featuring the work of Acrylic Artist Vincent Dawson as part of the Maldon Art trail also running the same weekend.
