Crafts with Purpose: Discover Everyday Chinese Heritage Through Paper-cutting and Traditional Crafts

Discover how traditional crafts help keep cultural heritage alive through everyday making, creativity and storytelling.

This workshop introduces visitors to the cultural meanings behind Chinese paper-cutting, decorative patterns and handmade traditions. Through a series of guided activities, participants will learn how these crafts have been used in family life, celebrations and community traditions across generations.

Alongside the practical activities, visitors will be able to explore examples of traditional motifs, symbols and visual references connected to Chinese craft heritage. The session will also highlight how cultural skills and knowledge are passed on, adapted and reinterpreted in contemporary life.

Suitable for children, families and visitors of all ages interested in creativity, culture and heritage, the workshop offers a relaxed and welcoming environment where participants can learn, make and share ideas together.

No previous experience is required, and all materials will be provided. Visitors are welcome to drop in, take part in the activities and discover how everyday objects, handmade skills and creative traditions can connect people across cultures and generations.

This workshop is generously supported by the Leeds Civic Trust Community Grant Programme as part of Leeds Heritage Open Days 2026. The grant helps us share Chinese cultural heritage through creative, inclusive and hands-on public engagement.

Swarthmore is a historic building, so wheelchair access is partial rather than full. This activity will take place in the most accessible areas of the building (ground floor and basement level). This is a drop-in activity, so visitors are welcome to arrive at any time during the event. All materials are provided free of charge, and children should be accompanied by an adult.
