Step back in time and experience the tranquil beauty of Muchelney Abbey without paying an admission fee! As part of the nationwide Heritage Open Days 2026 Festival, we are throwing open our doors to give visitors full, free access to the abbey’s interior rooms and picturesque grounds.

Watch traditional stone carving techniques in action and see how medieval builders shaped the very walls of the abbey.
Chat directly with the stonemason to learn about the tools, trade secrets, and architectural artistry required to build and preserve historic monuments.
Explore the Abbey Interior & Grounds
The Cloister & Foundations: Wander through the ruins of the abbey church and cloister walk to get a sense of everyday monastic life centuries ago. Enjoy a peaceful stroll around the surrounding lawns and gardens, set against the scenic backdrop of the Somerset Levels.
Booking: No pre-booking required! Simply turn up on the day between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm.

Ground-level areas and abbey grounds are largely accessible. Due to the historic nature of the building, upper floors inside the Abbot’s House are reached via uneven stone stairs and may present access challenges for some visitors. Facilities: On-site toilets and basic visitor amenities available. Parking: Parking is availableon site Dogs: Dogs on leads are welcome in the outdoor grounds and inside the historic buildings.
