CYCLING & DIAPERING
Station House, Station Lane, Ingatestone, Essex, CM4 0BW
A cycle ride based around the "William Byrd Fantasia" cycle ride of Ingatestone Pedallers where the cycling group will stop at various points on the ride to look at examples of local architecture, in particular at Ingatestone Station, which will link in with the celebrations of 200 years of railways in RAILWAY200. Several buildings, including the 1846 Ingatestone Ticket Office and Station Master's House, exhibit examples of "diaper" work on the brick facades, a technique which dates back to the Tudor period. Ingatestone Church tower (c1490), Ingatestone Peter Alms Houses (1840) and the Crossing Cottage at the station which is being converted into a new local museum (c1850), exhibit examples of this brick decoration. The smooth quality of the treated bricks makes this a tactile surface which can also be appreciated by the blind and partially sighted where you are able to get up close to the brickwork itself. The cycle ride is circular and is some 16 miles in total. A stop in the village of Blackmore for refreshments will be included where we can also study an example of "Essex Pagoda" church!
