Daventry United Reformed Church

An opportunity to see inside this Grade 2 Listed chapel. The church began as a Congregational chapel in 1722, reflecting the Nonconformist movement of the time. In the 18th century, it also housed a Dissenting Academy, where notable figures including Joseph Priestley (the scientist who discovered oxygen) studied. The Daventry United Reform Church is opening it's doors in celebration of Heritage Open Days.

Sheaf Street itself is a 16th century creation with a number of interesting buildings including the Wheatsheaf Hotel where Charles I is reputed to have stayed prior to the Battle of Naseby. Notable other buildings in Sheaf Street include the bookshop, Suddenly On Sheaf Street, which was the town house of the Knightley family of Fawsley Hall - the bookshops boasts an original Jacobean oak staircase and four original fireplaces.
