A presentation to take visitors though an intriguing story to reveal how church walls can provide a deep history of geology, river transport and re-use of materials through the ages.

Retired geologist Ian Mercer reveals how blocks and cobbles of building material have long been dug from nearby pits, cleared from the land, transported up rivers from seashores and re-used over and over again. Materials used in churches and walls in and around this area may thus broadly reflect underlying geology, river transport and re-use of materials through the ages. A close look at the walls of an ancient church can provide an intriguing insight into the links between human history, geography and geology.
