Devizes Wharf Theatre
Wharf Theatre, The Wharf, Devizes, Wiltshire, SN10 1EB
The building that houses the Wharf Theatre was originally a mid-19th century transit warehouse on the Devizes Wharf, part of the Kennet and Avon Canal, which opened in 1810. It was constructed in red brick with a slate-covered pitched roof and served as a hub for transferring goods from long-haul to local transport, reflecting the industrial activity of the era. By the 1950s, with the decline of canal transport, the warehouse had fallen out of use. When the Kennet District Council redeveloped the Wharf area, the society was offered the dilapidated warehouse next to the canal. The amateur actors raised £12,000 to convert it into a theatre, and the present Wharf Theatre officially opened in May 1980
