In 2023 a major community project explored the site of Great Torrington's medieval castle, built by the Normans and now reduced to a ruined mound and a car park. Learn about the castle's troubled history and see what was found in the trenches.

Torrington Castle is a little-known and overlooked medieval site in a small North Devon market town which was once much more important than it is now. In 2023 a community project raised funds to mount an archaeological survey of the mound and its surroundings using professional archaeologists and local volunteers of all ages including local schools. Torrington Museum is excited to share the findings and many of the thousands of artefacts from the dig along with the many awards the project has won in the aftermath, all in the latest addition to our museum: our grade II* listed 1842 Market House which has been closed to the public for several years.
