The Bayeux Tapestry is supposed to have been hung in the refectory. King Stephen died in 1154 on his way back from France. Thomas Tallis 1530 organ master. Original priory church ruins. The school chapel was the Guesten Hall for the Priory and the place where travellers would have stayed en route to Europe or on their return from Europe.

Dover College opened on 12th September 1871 with 15 boys using the site and remains of the Priory of St Martins and St Mary. There were 3 buildings still standing from the time of the 12th century priory, the refectory which had been a barn in the 18th and 19th century and which Turner painted in one of his pictures; the Gatehouse which would have been the main entrance to the priory and which now houses the archive and school museum; and the school chapel which was originally a hall where guests stayed.
