Unique set of three carstone & white brick, gothic style buildings

The complex was designed by William Lawrie and built by William Goose in 1856 and the North Chapel of these three buildings will be open.
The North Chapel is one of two identical Cemetery chapels built in the early Gothic style in carstone and white brick and situated with the Sexton's House just inside the gates of the King's Walk Graveyard. Unusually these are managed by Downham Market and Downham West Joint Burial Board, there being perhaps only 5 or 6 Burial Boards left in the country.

The North Chapel, which will be open, was for Anglicans and has a larger bell. The other was for the non-conformists. King's Walk cemetery dates from around 1856-1900 and the first interment Churchside was 19th November 1887 and the cemetery was in regular use until 1947. Sitting amidst the Burial Board's cemetery there are notable gravestones to find....including James Scott, a grocer & draper who donated the well known black & white Downham Market clock to the town and Herbert Raby the prolific local photographer in the early part of the 1900s. Parts of the cemetery have now been left for nature conservation under a two year rotation plan
