The Knights of Skirbeck, taking us back in time, will be present on our Heritage Open Day bringing colour and swashbuckling to Downham Market. They recreate medieval life in England of the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries, a time spanning the War of the Roses, a vivid time in our history.
Knights of Skirbeck are here to bring you a spectacular day of medieval military life.
10 am Call to arms. Time to enlist locals to the town militia. Encampment open for public show and tell (interactive displays of armour, weapons and talks on medieval life), opportunities to try on and take photos, also stocks for those who are misbehaving
11 am What would the town militia wear? A talk on the clothing of the period
12 pm Military rest and eat. Bring a family picnic
12.30 pm Activities restart
1 pm Death of a king. Weapons & how they were used
2.30 pm Dressing of the knight
3 pm Hand-to-hand combat in the arena
The whole family will find something special to inform and entertain them and be able to see history in action, glimpse the life of a knight's family, how they dressed, what they ate, and what weapons they used to defend their families and lands. Also look out for reenactments by Downham Amateur Dramatic Society and Watlington Players.
