Downham Market..Town Clock
Downham Market Town Clock, Town Square, Bridge Street, Downham Market, Norfolk, PE38 9DW
One of the most iconic features of this charming town is the Town Clock, a Gothic masterpiece and a delightful landmark that has been keeping time since 1878. Local businessman James Scott - a grocer and draper ... decided that Downham Market needed a proper timepiece and commissioned London-based William Cunliffe to design and build the clock, which was erected at a cost of £450. The clock features a cast iron octagonal base that supports a rectangular clock chamber with four illuminated dials, all in a black and white colour scheme.
Beyond its practical purpose, the Town Clock has been a focal point for social and civic gatherings. In 1907, it was humorously noted that "no one in Downham was out of work, other than a few lazy fellows standing against the clock"
Due to it being a very restricted space inside, viewing is only from the comfort of the square but if you look carefully you will find there is a well hidden door which can be opened and you can peer inside!
