Discover over 1,000 years of printmaking, from early relief printing to contemporary techniques, through historic processes, working materials, and prints made in the studio today.

A History of Printmaking explores how artists have used wood, metal, stone, and screens to create images, from early woodcuts to contemporary studio practice. Visitors will see historic techniques, working materials, and prints by Eastgate Studio artists, alongside live demonstrations. Printmaking has played a vital role in communication, protest, education, and everyday life. This exhibition highlights its importance as both cultural heritage and living practice. The exhibition is free and suitable for all ages.

Front entrance: Entry is via a single step up to the front door. Ground‑floor exhibition: The History of Printmaking exhibition is located on the ground floor. Ground‑floor toilet: A toilet is available on the ground floor, accessed by a small step up. This is not a disabled-access toilet. First‑floor exhibition: An additional exhibition of members’ work is on the first floor, reached by a steep staircase. This may present difficulties for visitors with limited mobility.

Additional information

Eastgate Studio Gallery is also an open access printmaking studio so members of the printmaking community may be working in the space during the event.
