The late 1840's saw the opening of the Eastwood Railway station which was approximately the mid point on the rail line between Hebden Bridge and Todmorden.
With support from the Railway company, the Station Hotel was opened in 1850 across the road from the station to provide drinks, food and accommodation for the growing community plus rail and road travellers.
The Station Hotel proved to be a popular meeting place for various groups, one of whom were a group of Freemasons who moved their 'Lodge' from Haworth to Todmorden, which with of ease of travel, Saturday afternoon meetings and hospitable accommodation saw Freemason's travel longer distances to attend the meetings at the Station Hotel, so much so a second Lodge was formed at the Station Hotel in the 1940's to accommodate an increasing membership.
Following the closure of the railway station, in the 1960's the owners of the Station Hotel put the building up for sale and it was purchased by the Freemasons who were still meeting there and extensive work was carried out to create a Masonic meeting hall and improved dining facilities. These alterations are still being used to this day.
