Eckington: Places, People and Poverty
Eckington Library, Market Street, Eckington, Derbyshire, S21 4JG
This exhibition will be open in Eckington Library from Friday 11th to Saturday 19th September. It will feature photos, maps, artefacts and videos from the Centre’s extensive collection covering the Victorian and Edwardian period, when the ancient town expanded considerably with the industrialisation and the coming of the Chesterfield canal, railways, larger (and deeper) mines and iron works. These were supported by the growth of housing, shops, schools, and churches, particularly free churches and an incredibly large number of public houses.
The exhibition will also feature newly researched stories of the Park Corn Mill Robinson family, and children working in mines before the law changed in early Victorian times and the sad deaths of 3 children and their would-be rescuer in the Seldom Seen mill pond in 1895.
The Library is the new home of the Eckington Heritage Centre and volunteers will be on hand on the days and times indicated. It would also be an opportunity to view the Essence of Eckington tile boards now on display in the library garden.
