Edible Architecture - Molten Ideas in a Scheduled Monument
Molten Building, 9 Cliffords Fort, North Shields, Tyne & Wear, NE30 1JE
The Molten Glass Gallery is a new venue in the Molten building - featuring glass work made on site and by local artists. The first show is in response to many people asking about the whole building, what was the history of the site, what was the inspiration - a galleon? an insect's eye? a blender... (New York resident)?, what were the design choices and why, what were the challenges, and how is the site developing in use now and into the future?
Henry's interest in the role of food production in buildings, how it might be integrated into an understanding of the way food might be constructed through challenging flavour combinations e.g. mustard gelato with cheese scone, just like the building challenges, and works with, the historic elements of the site. This is an ongoing experiment, this being the first time is actually with the fully completed building. FYI the top apartment is let to guests so a full tour of the top floor will not be possible. It is possible to view it either through the Holiday Cottages letting site (The Observatory) or on Youtube through the recent films made about the Molten Building, for the 2025 North Shields 800 years old celebrations.
