Eight Decades of Shared Heritage: RAF Lakenheath and the US Air Force

Since the summer of 1948, the US Air Force (USAF) has been the caretaker of RAF Lakenheath. For nearly eight decades, the special friendship between the USAF and the people of Suffolk has continually endured, albeit with its occasional bumps in the road e.g., how aircraft have steadily become louder and louder. For the first decade, the USAF utilized RAF Lakenheath as a home for rotating strategic bombers, a place that marked pre-air-to-air refueling deterrence against possible Soviet aggression into Western Europe. Beginning in January 1960, the rotational forces stopped and a permanent unit was stationed at RAF Lakenheath, one that has been present ever since, the 48th Fighter Wing. The 48th has swapped out its aircraft five times over the last six decades, but its mission has always been the same, a vital deterrence component of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s defense of a free Europe.
