Elisabeth Deneys Memorial Opening
Railway Terrace, Bideford, Devon, EX39 4BB
Saturday 13 September 1130 Elisabeth Deneys Memorial Bideford Station EX39 4BB – memorial plaque to be unveiled by Mayor of Bideford Councillor Peter Lawrence. Bideford has a long history as a place of sanctuary: French Huguenots escaping religious persecution in the 1600s, Belgian refugees in WW I, evacuees in WW II and today those escaping conflict in Eastern Europe and around the world. This new plaque; in memory of 11-year-old Belgian Refugee Elisabeth Deneys, killed by a train while playing on the station in 1917; remembers those who have and continue to find safety here and the compassion of local people who support them. No pre booking required. Access by steps to station or from Royal Hotel Car Park Torrington Lane. This event will take place during the Bideford Railway Heritage Centre Open Day. Organised by Bideford & River Torridge Heritage Harbour together with Bideford Town Council.
