Inside Etruria: Past, Present & Future

For Heritage Open Days, the former Canal & River Trust Maintenance Yard at Etruria will open its gates for a relaxed day of discovery, activities and conversation.

Sitting at the meeting point of the Trent & Mersey and Caldon canals, the yard is right at the heart of one of Stoke-on-Trent's most fascinating historic landscapes. Around it are canals, locks, industrial buildings, Etruria Industrial Museum and Shirley's Bone & Flint Mill – all reminders of the industries and everyday working lives that shaped this part of the city.

Drop in, explore the site and discover some of the stories hidden within the wider Etruria Valley. There will be historic and contemporary maps, photographs and information to explore, alongside activities for children and families.

We'll also be sharing some exciting ideas currently being developed for the area – from the potential rescue and reuse of Oliver's Mill to plans to breathe new life into the Maintenance Yard itself as a temporary space for events, making, creativity, heritage and community activity.

And we'd love you to add to the story. Scribble on a map, leave an idea, tell us something you remember about Etruria or simply have a chat over a cup of tea. What places have we missed? What stories should be told? And what would bring you back to Etruria in the future?

Directions:

There will be refreshments, maps and creative activities, with things for children to do too. All ages are welcome and you don't need any specialist knowledge – we are interested in what people who live in, work in, visit and care about Stoke-on-Trent think. The workshop takes place alongside Shirley’s Bone & Flint Mill steaming and other complementary Heritage Open Days activities at Etruria, making it a great opportunity to explore the area's industrial past while helping to imagine its future.
