Everyday Histories: Behind the Doors of The Harrogate Club
The Club, 36 Victoria Avenue, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, HG1 5PR
Founded in 1857, The Harrogate Club has played a key role in the town’s social and business life for 169 years. As Harrogate expanded, the Club commissioned H.E. & A. Bown to design a purpose-built clubhouse in the prestigious Victoria Park Estate, creating the striking building we know today. The new clubhouse officially opened on 25th March 1886.
As part of this year’s Heritage Open Days, and in keeping with the theme of Everyday Histories, visitors will enjoy a guided tour that brings together the building and its lived history.
As you move through the Club, we will share stories from the past - offering a glimpse into the lives of stewards and staff from earlier generations, whose work supported the day-to-day life of The Club and its members.
During your visit, you will have the opportunity to view the original 1885 architectural plans, admire the distinctive façade, explore the interior with its period features, and discover the everyday stories that bring The Club’s history to life.
The Harrogate Club has long been a meeting place for those involved in the life and development of the town, contributing to Harrogate’s growth as a spa town and leading cultural centre.
Coffee and homemade cake will be available – donations are voluntary.
