Everyday Histories: The Ukrainian Community in Reading
21 Sidmouth Street, Reading, Berkshire, RG1 4QZ
The Ukrainian Community Centre has been part of Reading’s social and cultural life since 1959, created by post-war Ukrainian families who made Berkshire their home. Over the decades, the centre has been a place for community gatherings, language, traditions, celebrations, and support across generations.
Today, the centre continues this role by welcoming newly displaced Ukrainians and providing a safe and supportive community space. Through everyday acts of care, volunteering, hosting a space for the Ukrainian library, cooking, conversation, and cultural activities, the centre connects past and present experiences of migration, resilience, and belonging.
Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the centre and learn more about the Ukrainian community in Reading. At 1 pm, the head of the community centre will give a 30-minute talk about the history of Ukrainians in Reading, sharing stories of settlement, community life, and how the centre has evolved over more than 65 years.
A Ukrainian café will be open throughout the afternoon, serving traditional Ukrainian food and refreshments.
