Have you ever wondered what life was like in a back-to-back house in 1900? Or how life in a back-to-back house has changed over the years? This podcast reveals the lives and memories of residents and former residents in their own words.

This podcast provides a short overview of the ‘everyday’ social history of the Harehills neighbourhood by a narrator, followed by a sequence of excerpts from audio recorded interviews with former and current residents (recorded 2019-2022). In these excerpts, the interviewees recall life from the early 1900s to the 2020s, and they discuss their daily lives and those of relatives they live(d) with, touching on the architecture and interiors, work, cleaning, leisure time, local shopping, family and neighbour relationships.

The voices and the detail they provide bring to life Harehills of the past, and despite the huge changes over the last 120 years, some interesting parallels can be seen. To conclude, the narrator will provide a summary of the key learning points.

This event is partially funded by Leeds Civic Trust.
