This one woman performance is a joyous romp through the life of theatre impresario Sarah Baker, who became a touring powerhouse across Kent, from a penniless traveller to one of the 18th century’s great businesswomen and creative forces.

Amid the powdered wigs and grand spectacle of Regency theatre, Sarah Baker became a powerhouse of popular entertainment, touring plays and performances across rural Kent. A dynamic theatre manager, she ran her venues with progressive employment practices and an egalitarian spirit, welcoming both royalty and ordinary people to share the same sense of wonder. Her stages brought audiences everything from Shakespeare’s timeless works to news from war-torn Europe and fashionable acts direct from London. Sarah ensured that the people of Kent had access to the very best entertainment of the day.

Her legacy as a bold, innovative woman succeeding in a male-dominated profession continues to inspire. This new production explores the story of an 18th-century rural touring theatre company and celebrates Kent’s rich performance heritage. Themes of community, resilience and storytelling give the work a strong contemporary relevance while highlighting a remarkable local historical figure.

Created by the Folkestone Performing Arts Company, the production will showcase their accessible and dynamic approach to theatre-making, engaging a broad range of audiences through inventive storytelling and performance.

As part of FPAC’s Heritage Open Day, we will host an open rehearsal featuring extracts from the new play, scenes from works performed during Sarah Baker’s era, and insights into the Kent locations where her theatres and performances brought communities together.
