Explore bellringing at St Clements, Leigh on Sea
St Clements Church, 17, The Broadway, Leigh on Sea, Essex, SS9 1PG
St Clement’s bell tower throws open its doors for one special weekend — Saturday 19 September (2.30–5.30pm) and Sunday 20 September (12–4pm) — inviting you into the normally hidden world of church bells and the art of change‑ringing. Step into the ringing room, discover what a sally and tail end are, explore how ringing 'methods' work, and even try ringing a bell yourself under expert guidance. Then climb into the belfry to see the centuries‑old bells up close — a rare treat for non‑ringers.
If heights don’t faze you, continue right to the top of the tower and take in sweeping views across the Thames Estuary towards Kent and London (weather permitting). Bellringing is a welcoming, nationwide hobby for all ages, and this is your chance to experience it first‑hand — you might even be inspired to learn to ring.

This event will require you to climb 50+ steps up inside the narrow tower stairwell, so, unfortunately, this is NOT a fully accessible event.
St Clements is one of a number of Towers nationally that are opening their doors this weekend.
