Explore Sheffield as it was in 1800 - Joseph Hunter's Walk

Sheffield Town Hall, Pinstone Street, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S1 2HH

  • 17 Sep 2025
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

We explore the town centre buildings antiquarian Joseph Hunter would have known in around 1800 and hear more about the influential Hunter family.

In his teenage years, Sheffield-born antiquarian and archivist Joseph Hunter published a tour of Sheffield in around 1800 - then a small town. Starting from the Town Hall, we will follow his route on a circular tour, looking at the buildings he knew and finding out more about them. We visit the Upper Chapel which was so influential to him as a young man - where the story also includes the wider Hunter family - examine the history of the Cutlers' Hall in Joseph's words, and move on past the Cathedral, through Paradise Square and Bank Street to return via High Street. Finally his later life and achievements will be described.
